"Paul, I have been looking forward to spending this day here with you for today...it's my 40th birthday!!"
Tracey,
Congratulations for stepping in and continuing your Dad's great legacy.
Like a million people who must be writing to you about their encounters with Charlie, I had a string of connections in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
One of the highlights was in October, 1967, when he spent a couple nights staying with me and my wife and kids in Concord CA. I was 35 years old then, was in journalism grad school at Cal Berkeley which campus of course was a "war zone" back in those days. Your dad wanted to spend a day on campus with me, attending classes etc. Which we did.
At the end of the day, as the two of us were about to leave the campus walking under Saither Gate, he put his arm around my shoulders and said: "Paul, I have been looking forward to spending this day here with you for today...it's my 40th birthday!!"
Today, I am 77 and will never forget the honor. Or the moment. During that stay with us, he had brought a draft of the manuscript for his first book for me to review and help edit. (I have been in the publishing biz since college at Wheaton, Class of "58.) Later when it was published I was on the dedication list. What a blessing.
I guess the most important message he always had was to point people to Christ. I am glad you are continuing the tradition. Oh, wondering where your brother is these days? Your dad back in the 60s and 70s was often quoting from his post cards.
I could write for ever and ever about lasting impressions, but will stop now.
God bless you in your Tremendous Task ahead.
